Dilma Rousseff was sworn in as Brazil's first female president on 1 January 2011. As the handpicked successor of the immensely popular president, Luiz Inacio "Lula" da Silva, Rousseff has taken charge of a country that is making enormous progress on the domestic front and is an increasingly serious and influential player in global affairs. It is hard to interpret the Brazilians' choice of president as anything but a vote for continuity in economic and social policies. To be sure, Rousseff, of the Workers' Party, has a number of talents that augur well for a successful presidency. She is known as an efficient administrator, a respected economist and able politician. As Lula's chief of staff and, before that, energy minister, Rousseff deserves some of the credit for Brazil's notable achievements in recent years. While the extremely active Lula was travelling the globe, extending Brazil's influence on a wide-ranging agenda, Rousseff was busy with governmental affairs at home. It will not, however, be enough for Rousseff to ride on Lula's favourable legacy. To keep Brazil on a productive trajectory, both at home and abroad, Rousseff will need to bring a renewed focus to long-standing problems whose solutions have eluded previous governments. Brazil's infrastructure and education challenges are huge, while criminal violence and corruption remain widespread.
