Area: 51,233 sq.km; 20% arable, 25% pasture and meadow, 36% forest and woodland, 2% permanent crop, 17% other. Coastline: 20km. Population: 4,613,414 (July 2010 est.); annual growth rate 0.339% (2010 est.). The population is 31% Serb, 44% Bosniak, 17% Croat, 8% other. Religions: Muslim 40%, Orthodox 31%, Catholic 15%, Protestant 4%, other 10%. Languages: Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian. The RS has passed legislation making the use of the Serbian language and the Cyrillic alphabet compulsory on its territory. Literacy rate: 94.6%. NB: In all matters regarding the BiH apart from specifically religious issues, the term "Bosniak" or "Bosniac" has been officially adopted in lieu of "Muslim". Long-form or legal name: Bosnia and Herzegovina (Bosna i Hercegovina, BiH). Type: Federative Republic comprised of two political-legal "entities": the Bosniak/Croat Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), which takes up 51 % of the territory, and the Serb Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska, RS). The FBiH is further subdivided into 10 Cantons. In addition to citizenship of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Constitution makes provisions for a citizenship of each "entity". The centralised institutions of the BiH are responsible for foreign policy, but such responsibility is not exclusive since both "entities" have the right to establish special parallel relationships. According to the Constitution, some governmental functions and powers remained those of the "entities". A EU/US initiative to introduce a series of constitutional amendments toward the creation of a unitary state was rejected by all three ethnic communities in October 2009.
