摘要

For Turkey, an element of stability and security in its region, having strong Armed Forces, and a defence industry capable of supporting these strong forces have been a state policy adopted since the early years of the Republic. Efforts in this area, which had been slowed down with our NATO membership, gained momentum with the embargos imposed on Turkey following the Cyprus Peace Operation, and the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (originally named Defence Industry Development and Support Administration) was established with Law No.3238 of 1985 for the purpose of determining the strategies and undertaking the implementation in this area. The duties of the Undersecretariat were defined in the law as "Developing a modern defence industry and ensuring modernisation of the Turkish Armed Forces."
