Twenty years ago, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, Czechoslovakia had a modern and strong Armed Forces. In the year 1993, when the country was divided into the Czech- and the Slovak Republic, the Armed Forces were also subdivided and their aims changed rapidly. In 1999, the Czech Republic joined NATO and integrated its military in the allied forces. Stability supporting missions to defeat terrorism became the main mission of the Czech Armed Forces.
