Political observers and analysts in the US and other western countries, believe that the various crises in the Middle East could lead to the re-launch of a new Cold War between the US and Russia. These crises include for example the permanent Arab - Israeli conflict, or the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran to acquire nuclear technology for peaceful and military purposes. According to the same figures, most chiefs and leaders in the Middle East hoped that the election of Barack Obama as President of the USA may lead to drastic changes in American policies towards the Middle East. Obama's promise to search for a solution in the Arab -Israeli conflict was based upon the idea of equation of peace. The Syrians were convinced that such a peace process may lead to the restoration of the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967. The success of Washington in this regard may also convince both, Palestinians and Israelis, that a solution is possible.
