Training systems are increasingly billed as "interactive" or "immersive". This article takes an overview as to what this actually means, particularly for the dismounted soldier. The Holy Grail for the military trainer is the creation of an environment, which so replicates the reality of operations that it provides trainees with the necessary experience to forearm themselves as far as possible for the real thing. LtGen. James Mattis, when he was Commanding General of the USMC Combat Development Command and subsequently I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), sought a training environment that ensured that "a marine's first firefight is no worse than the last simulation he undertook."
