India witnessed a series of developments in its immediate neighbourhood in the month of May 2011, whose politico-security implications are currently been assessed. The world's most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden was killed in Abbotabad cantonment town, not far from Islamabad. Within a month's time, the security situation in Pakistan has worsened, with several attacks carried out by various terrorist outfits within Pakistan, the latest being the murder of a prominent investigative journalist Salim Shahzad. Such incidents, as well as larger implications of the death of bin Laden will have very serious implications for the reason. The Indian government is watching these developments while advising the Armed Forces and other security forces to remain vigilant in coming times. The defence secretaries of India and Pakistan met recently as part of the bilateral relations to discuss issues related to Siachen. Although nothing concrete came out of this meeting, it is expected that the process of bilateral meetings at various levels will continue in future. The Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit to Afghanistan in the early part of the month has brought in positive results for both countries as India promises to extend its assistance to Afghanistan, including help train the Afghan security forces. The current visit of the chief of Afghan defence forces to India is likely to boost the defence relations between the two countries.
