Radiosoundings are the "de facto" practice today in producing ballistic weather profiles. As the ranges of indirect fire are getting longer and longer, some suggest that Numerical Weather Prediction models would provide more accurate for the trajectory. There are, however, problems also with the model approach.Medieval long-bow archers were well aware of the significant effects of wind. Shooting an arrow right up into the air to see in what direction the wind took it was a usual practice to assess the effect on the shooting trajectory.
