Specialised Frigate and Destroyer -Are They Worth the Expense?

The size of the world's fleets is constantly dwindling and the few remaining warships are tasked with a larger number of missions. Some, like air-defence, are going to be further expanded towards ballistic missile defence (BMD); others, like antisubmarine warfare (ASW), are being questioned because of a reduced perception of the threat. New roles, previously unknown to the Navy and certainly to the frigate, are emerging, such as stabilisation, support of Special Forces, and land-attack. Lesser demanding roles, such as maritime interdiction and maritime security are, as a matter of fact, the most frequent tasks for frigates. Comparing the operational requirements versus the available budget should provide the answer for the right force mix.
