The French MoD has formally approved the sale of a MISTRAL-class LHD-type amphibious assault ship to Russia (see MT 2/10 p. 114 for details). The final decision on whether to proceed on the proposed sale, which if completed would be the first such arms deal rnbetween Russia and a member of NATO, is reported having been personally taken by French President Nicolas Sarkozy himself.rnContrary to earlier indications of Russian plans for the first French-built vessel to be followed by a licence construction programme, it rnis now understood that the Russian naval authorities have submitted a follow-on request for three more ships, with at least one of these to be also built in France.
