Ground-based radars are essential for air defence, both on the battlefield and at the national level. Ever since such radars entered widespread use during WW2, they provided a mechanism by which the position of hostile and friendly aircraft can be plotted, allowing their speed, bearing and range to be made available to Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) batteries, Surface-to-Air Missiie (SAM) sites or air defence intercept aircraft. This article will primarily concentrate on ground-based air search radars rather than fire control systems and airborne early warning radars.
