Britain has not had a root-and-branch review of its defence policy since 1998. But now, in the wake of the general election, the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) will be the biggest issue occupying the minds of the UK defence establishment and industry - with the obvious exception of the war in Afghanistan - in the run up to the hot house of the Famborough Air Show. Clearly, all the long-running, big-ticket procurement programmes are the subjects of very close scrutiny, and decisions made about them in the next few months will have profound effects on the future of UK air power along with the rest of the country's defence aspirations and capabilities.
