The modernisation of Poland's Armed Forces depend to a large extent upon the country's economical abilities or constraints, while Poland's defence industry is influenced by worldwide recession. A number of key programmes are delayed or "axed." The withdrawal of all Polish soldiers from Afghanistan by 2012, as announced by the new president Komorowski, is likely to change this outlook somewhat. However, Poland's own defence industry can hardly survive without specific and painful cuts. Only by the strong preference of local products, multi-year contracts, and wise alliances with foreign partners by Poland's MoD, can the Polish defence industry maintain its domestic market position and remain competitive on international markets.
