MT: What is the historical background of BEL?rnKumar Datt: Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) was set up at Bangalore, India, by the Government in 1954 to meet the specialised professional electronics needs of the Indian defence services. Over the years, it has grown into a multi-product, multi-unit company serving the needs of customers in diverse fields in India and abroad. Starting with the manufacture of a few communication equipment, today BEL meets a variety of requirements of the Indian Defence Services in the areas of communication equipment, radars, sonars, other naval systems, AFV electronics, EW equipment, C4I systems, SATCOM, turnkey projects, etc, meeting stringent defence specifications.rnBeing the leader in professional electronics in the country, BEL also meets the requirements of the civilian segment in areas such as telecommunication and broadcasting, solar photovoltaics, components and turnkey system solutions. Notably, BEL has developed and supplied electronic voting machines to the Election Commission of India.
