To comprehend the issues involved in the defence of the Philippines, it is essential to recognise that it is less than a year since the end of the country's urban battle - the longest in its modern history - to defeat an attempted takeover of the city of Marawi by an IS-affiliated alliance of Abu Sayaf and a group centred on the Maute Group, otherwise known as the Islamic State of Lanao. With support from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and Ansar Khalifa Philippines, they tried to form a caliphate in the capital city of Lano del Sur Province, an autonomous Muslim region in Mindanao in the south.
