Since its inception on 4 April 1949 in Washington DC, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has brought security and stability to the Euro Atlantic region. The Alliance has continuously adapted through the last seven decades to face the evolving security situation and to counter threats presented by emerging technologies from both state and non-state actors. Historical events such as the end of the Cold War, the Suez Crisis, the Balkan Wars and the 9/11 attacks have shaped our world and the Alliance has responded, continuing to provide protection for over 1 billion people.
