Growing Russian military activity in the Baltic region is the principal reason why NATO decided to deploy troops from several member states to Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland. "The developments there can result in increased tensions with Russia," a NATO representative stated in 2016. "We are at risk of war," the Deputy Commander of US Sixth Fleet warned. This decision was heavily criticised by Russia's ambassador to NATO, Alexander Grushko, who warned of the risk of a, "spiral confrontation." NATO's decision would result in, "military consequences."
