It is ironic that, while industry is working hard on experimental compound helicopters and tilt-rotors that promise to revolutionise ro-torcraft performance, the best-selling and most influential military rotorcraft today are primarily aircraft that were originally designed in the 1960s and 1970s. In most rotorcraft categories, legacy designs dominate the market and the most recent designs have sometimes struggled to gain traction.
