In response to emerging requirements from an increasingly complex operating environment, armed forces around the world are considering a series of next-generation upgrades to enhance the camouflage protection of both personnel and platforms. Camouflage enhancements now reach far beyond more traditional upgrades in combat uniforms and camouflage nets, which have tended to focus on physical protection. According to US Army personnel, camouflage solutions now fall under the wider remit of signature management, which includes requirements to reduce not only physical properties but also thermal, radar, visual, near-IR and acoustic signatures. Operational requirements for this broader scope of signature management also feature the needs to better manage the digital presence of soldiers on the battlefield (including social media and RF communications) and to deal with biometric tracking, service officials disclosed to MT.
