French and British Navies have been bolstering their military presence in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. France is the only European country to possess territories in Asia, namely New Caledonia, Wallis-et-Futuna and Polynesia. These account for 85% of the French Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the second largest in the world. In addition, roughly 32% of French imports and 36% of exports transit the Pacific. Along with a €75 billion flow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). At the military level, France has renewed its interest in the area since 2015, when the annual 'Jeanne d'Arc' missions started including extensive tours of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The scope of the exercise is to complete the education and training of Marine Nationale's officers. Usually, each tour is conducted by one of France's BPCs (in substance LHDs), one LA FAYETTE-class frigate, a detachment of naval troops (TDM) and aircraft from Army Light Aviation (ALAT). In 2018, two Royal Navy AW-159 WILDCAT and 30 personnel, plus a detachment of 45 US Marines also participated.
