There's a debate going on in the US Army about what the military service's next combat vehicle and rotorcraft should look like. When it comes to communicating on the battlefields of tomorrow, though, everybody in the US Army seems to agree on what they would like: A smartphone! The army has been trying to satisfy that need for two decades, ever since JTRS kicked off in 1997. At AUSA 2018, Datron World Communications showcased the firm's new HH-3100 SPECTRE-MTM multiband handheld tactical radio, alongside its MT-3100 mobile mount. These new radios represent the company's first forays into the multiband market. The addition of the HH-3100 series to the SPECTRE tactical radios family provides secure and flexible network communications in the 30-512MHz bands for dismounted and mobile soldiers across the theatre of operations. The radio features embedded electronic counter-counter measures provision, AES-256 standard communications security, an embedded global positioning system and an amplitude modulated modem for ground-to-air communications. Moreover, the radio is US DoD Military-Standard-810G certified for operations in harsh environments. Additional communications and transmission security is provided by frequency hopping and digital encryption waveforms. The HH-3100 has been ergonomically designed, with dual push-to-talk operations for ambidextrous operation, and a centrally-positioned antenna to improve the balance of the transceiver in the operator's hand.
