Conducting an assault breaching of mines and obstacles particularly under fire remains one of the most difficult military operations. Its smooth and successful execution is critical to maintaining ground force manoeuvre and momentum essential in the attack. In Iraq and Afghanistan mines, lEDs, and/or other obstacles were used to gain advantage by halting a column and then attacking it. Rapidly and effectively clearing physical obstacles to ground movement is referred to as "breeching". The goal is to minimize exposure in the "kill zone" upsetting the defence. An effective breach requires well practiced tactics, procedures, and proper breeching tools. This piece will consider the systems and technologies available to conduct breaching.
