摘要

Past wars on land, sea and air have been compared to chess, where commanders must see several moves ahead in order to win. Mastering war requires an exceptional commander, who can visualise multiple factors in his mind's eye, then decide, act and react in time and space. As war has become more complex, visualising the next steps has become increasingly complicated. The 19th Century military philosopher, Carl von Clausewitz, understood that a commander needed to "work in a medium which his eyes cannot see; which his best deductive powers cannot always fathom; and with which, because of constant changes he, can rarely become familiar." The unprecedented connectivity and convergence of the new domains of war of the 21st century make Clausewitz's dictum even more prescient. War now occurs across five domains - land, sea, air, cyber and space - and is more analogous to a three-dimensional chess game with exponential challenges that are next to impossible for humans to visualise.
