The Collins English Dictionary defines the word 'cyborg' as follows; "In science fiction, a cyborg is a being that is part human and part machine." Of course, that is in science fiction. But what if the concept of the cyborg has gone beyond the realms of science fiction and is now on the verge of becoming science fact? And if that were the case, would not the possibilities offered by a fusion of human and machine offer immense opportunities for military applications? You might be surprised to discover that the era of the cyborg is closer than you think! What is immediately interesting is that the origin of the word cyborg does not come from the science fiction canon; in fact, the word is rooted far more strongly in science fact or, to be more precise, the space programme of the 1950s and 1960s. Early in 1960, at a symposium entitled Psychophysiological Aspects of Space Flight, Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline gave a paper in which they coined the term. The New York Times reported on the symposium in May 1960, noting that "A cyborg is essentially a man-machine system in which the control mechanisms of the human portion are modified externally by drugs or regulatory devices, so that the being can live in an environment different from the normal one." Clynes and Kline then followed this up by publishing an article entitled Cyborgs and Space, in the September 1960 edition of the journal Astronautics - an article seen by many as marking the start of the cyborg era.
