Australia established its new Australian Space Agency (ASA) in July 2018, with AS73.2 million (€45.2 million) in funding that aims to enhance civil industry, help America's NASA return to the Moon and transform the economy within the next decade. Defence is already one of the largest investors in space but, for the Australian Defence Force (ADF), it presents an additional opportunity to leverage this investment in industry to develop its own space-based technologies, which are becoming increasingly important for current and future operations. Australia needs to enhance the capability of its space-based assets and it is undertaking a series of programmes that will provide the military with sovereign systems on which it can rely.
