The military concept of 'fix forward' advocates conduct of maintenance, diagnosis and repair of weapons and equipment at the place of failure, or a secure close site. As highlighted in US Army FM 100-5 in 1981 "Every effort will be made to repair equipment as far forward as possible to reduce the time required to return it to battle." Its use by the Israeli Defense Force was credited with returning 2,700 damaged combat vehicles into service in fourteen days during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Efficient forward repair mitigates the assets lost to mechanical and battle damage, thus continuously renewing the capability of committed units. For forces entering operations with a fixed number of assets, maintaining their availability is critical. Several advances in technology are allowing significant improvements in efficient and responsive repair and maintenance capability. These are further enabling a truer form of fix forward than has previously been possible.
