Immersion in virtual worlds has been a staple of gaming - and many aspects of military training in simulators - for decades now, and augmentation of the real world with virtual elements is being integrated into both training and operational environments. This is blurring the lines between reality, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), so much so that most applications now occupy points along a mixed reality (MR) spectrum. Recent advances in tracking of the user's hands and line of sight, in rapid scanning of real environments and light, compact, high-resolution headsets are maturing, just as demand for highly portable simulation-centred solutions is growing, creating conditions for something of a revolution in the market.
