Lake Pend Oreille lies in Idaho's panhandle, about 140km from the Canadian border. The glacial lake, nearly 70km long and up to 350m deep, is home to wild trout, pike, whitefish, salmon...and submarines. The engineers of the Acoustic Research Detachment (ARD) of the US Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division at Bayview, ID, work on R&D programmes ranging from submarine propulsor and sonar dome designs to calibration of full-scale acoustic transducers for submarine stealth technology. Their programmes contribute directly to the development of advanced submarine designs. Although the nearest ocean is 563km away, the Navy has conducted acoustic research and testing in the deep, quiet lake for decades, using self-propelled autonomous underwater vehicles and buoyant vehicles, named for the fish that share the lake - Dolly Varden, Kamloops, Kokanee, Pike, Whitefish, Steelhead and Cutthroat.
