The SAN GIUSTO Landing Platform Dock (LPD) has been in service with the Italian Navy since 1994, as an improved version of the two SAN GIORGIO-class LPDs. These three ships, still in service, were conceived to provide the service with comprehensive air, land, and sea projection capabilities for amphibious operations. Before them, such capacities were rather sparse, being limited by treaties signed after the Second World War. Building such a capacity has been possible thanks to these modest -yet mighty - ships, which have supported the Marina Militare's operations in the Mediterranean (Libya and Lebanon), the Middle East (Somalia and Iraq), and away as far as East Timor. They have also proved to be an asset in disaster relief, humanitarian, and SAR operations. Without the so-called 'SANTIs,' Italy would not have developed the expertise that will shortly be augmented with the commissioning of the TRIEST LHD, the biggest ship in Italian naval history. As importantly, the capability provided by these small, multipurpose amphibious vessels has caused forces such as the Algerian and Qatari navies to flesh out their fleets with updated versions of the SAN GIUSTOs. Like the Marina Militare, both services sought a starting point for building small, well-founded amphibious forces, offering a high-value asset at the regional level. In dissimilar fashion to the Italians, however, both nations expanded the capabilities of the Enhanced SAN GIUSTO-class, turning them effectively into multi-role capital ships. In the respective orders of battle, the vessels are the key node of naval operations, thanks to advanced C4I capabilities, long-range air and surface surveillance radars, and comprehensive self-defence systems.
