One of the best memoirs I ever read about WWII service, it begins in April 1941, when Michael Bilder was drafted into the peacetime army for what was supposed to be a single year of service. It ends after training in the States, months spent on lonely guard duty in Iceland, more training in Northern Ireland, and finally combat in Europe from July 1944 to the end of the war.
