This book, NAM-SENSE, is the best, most accurate portrayal of the life of an infantryman in Viet Nam. Author Wiknik was a sharp, intelligent 19-year-old draftee who came across an honorable, if a short-term way of avoiding service in Viet Nam. Wiknik trained and became an "Instant NCO" or "a Shake-n-Bake Sergeant," which upon graduation made him an immediate "replacement" bound for Viet Nam. Within Sgt. Wiknik's first month in country (May 1969), he found himself leading his squad in the final assault that helped secure Hamburger Hill. A few weeks later, his squad discovered a large North Vietnamese Army "warehouse" consisting of more than 20 bunkers, weapons, rice and medical supplies.
