A revolutionary new diet is capable of dramatically reducing the amount of methane each cow 'emits' in producing a pint of milk. Details of this and other environmental initiatives in the dairy sector have been unveiled in Dairy UK's publication, Green and White. At present, methane from the dairy herd is estimated to contribute 1 % of the UK's total greenhouse gas emissions. Now, trials in Wales by dairy co-op First Milk and animal nutritionists at Keenan Rumans, suggest the diet boosts milk yield per cow by up to four litres a day, while overall methane emissions are actually lowered. Early results point to a net 20% drop in the amount of gas produced for each litre of milk. If these figures could be repeated for the UK's entire milk output, it would be the equivalent of removing 1.6 million tonnes of CO_2 from the atmosphere each year. Dairy UK Director General Jim Begg said: "This terrific initiative in Wales shows how we can make the dairy sector even greener, and give consumers the low-carbon products they want."
