摘要

This summer has been exceptionally warm and dry. As I write this article, forecasters are predicting records for Britain's hottest and driest July to be broken and although some parts of the British isles have been spared the worst (or best) of the heat-wave, the effects have been felt in most regions. Weather is nearly always a talking point for farmers, more so than your average Joe Public, because their livelihoods really do depend on it. Only three or four years ago, farmers in Northern Ireland were appealing to the European Commission for weather aid to help counter the effects of a wet, cold spring and summer that thwarted their efforts to make silage and provide suitable grazing ground for cattle.
