Customers would hardly notice a roll container as they move along the supermarket aisles - but they are always there in the liquid milk display area, stacked high with milk in all shapes and sizes from Britain's major dairies. They are highly functional - and very desirable. So much so, that many people outside the dairy sector have "adopted" them for their own needs across the food and other sectors - and that is costing the dairy industry a lot of money. These rollers represent a big investment for dairies. They cost close to £100 each and at any given time Dairy UK estimates that there are up to 500,000 in circulation. This includes many hundreds that have not been returned to their owners, which add up to very big money indeed. So in order to help the industry save costs, Dairy UK operates a comprehensive roller recovery scheme that locates stray rollers and reunites them with their rightful owners. As Edmund Proffitt, Dairy UK's processing manager, points out, rollers are used to distribute around 85% of the liquid milk sold in Britain and the recovery service stems significant potential losses every month.
