The dairy industry tends to be a large water user. This results in large quantities of heavily polluted wastewater for disposal. Water companies have strict controls on the quantity and the quality of the wastewater being discharged into public sewers. Legislation supports them. Discharge to watercourse is even stricter and is policed by the Environment Agency (EA). Penalties for transgression can be financial and can, in some cases, prohibit operations. The EA itself is implementing Pollution Prevention Control (PPC) and companies will have to comply.
