摘要

Many, especially the producers, suggest that kaolin carries the stigma and price of a commodity but requires a speciality process flowsheet for its production. The present contribution is intended to convey some of the reasons behind this point of view. Much technical effort goes into producing a tonne of kaolin and the industry provides many examples of the use of unique processing techniques that are world leaders. Higher qualities, more consistent production, special grades and tighter specifications are demanded by customers and are being achieved by the kaolin industry around the world. The processes and modifications that have been introduced by the industry in the past few years have often had to be developed by the industry itself owing to a lack of commercial insight into our requirements on the part of many of the equipment manufacturers, but this situation has improved recently. The pressures from customers have never been greater, so from within the industry the pressure for lower costs to maintain financial margins is also to the fore. Effort has been focused on the lowering of costs through more efficient operation and high product recoveries, but the development and introduction of new and specialized products have also been significant.
