摘要

On page 5 of his latest book, the distinguished Australian historian Stuart Macintyre explains the meaning of its title: "[I]n the branch of the federal government that oversees research activity in Australia, the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, and Research," the natural sciences and technology are favored and "the social sciences are the poor relations." His book plots the growth of the social sciences in Australia, marking many false starts and unrealized goals as well as solid accomplishments. Macintyre describes the disciplines' development as some function of the nation's mobilization during World War n, when social scientists were enrolled to assist in the prosecution of the war—and Australian social sciences ceased to represent a colonial domain, becoming a congeries of home-grown enterprises, rather than derivative products of British and American disciplines.
