Students of the 'long' McCarthy period in the United States-from the late 1940s through the 1950s-have paid inadequate attention to the effects of this oppressive time upon science. Visa and passport denials, loyalty oaths, security investigations, and other problems placed in the paths of scientists no doubt hindered science. But they also increased the political maturity of its practitioners, a fact of which recent events make us particularly aware.
