Secrets among Friends: The Research Information Service and the 'Special Relationship' in Allied Scientific Information and Intelligence, 1916--1918
NO ASPECT of modern warfare is more closely studied than that concerned with the conceptualisation, development, production and use of science-based weapons. War in this century has become a project of science and technology, which, in the Western world, has been accelerated by alliances forged between universities, governments and industries. The contribution made by the Second World War to framing this "complex" are well known. By contrast, Few scholars have turned back the pates of history, and looked to the Preceding generation, and to the First World War-a time of improvisation And experiment, amidst the appalling carnage wrought by new weapons-to Trace the sources of this brave new world, so familiar to us all.
