EDWARD SHILS died in Chicago in January 1995. Since then the academic world has been trying to come to terms with his departure. Here now are three posthumous collections, one on academic colleagues and two on academic institutions, put together by three of his pupils or associates. A fourth and final publications is planned by Steven Grosby and Joseph Epstein to include Shils' unpublished intellectual autobiography, written along the lines of his Search, throughout a long career, for an answer to the question of how Societies form and retain what he called "consensus" in the 1930s, and what he Came to refer to as "collective self-consciousness" in his last years.
