Once this has happened, zircon and titanium minerals often find their way to the same locations because they share two major characteristics: * A relatively high specific gravity so, through the persistent concentrating effects of wave actions, they eventually tend to be deposited in the same places along coastlines. * A great resistance to both leaching and abrasion, such that the action of time and water does not result in their being eroded or dissolved, as occurs with many other heavy metallic minerals. The most common major impurities are free silica, iron oxide and titanium oxides. Zircon demand and end-uses The prime drivers of zircon demand are in the end-use sectors of ceramics, specialty chemicals and materials, and refractories, foundry sand and the minor television glass market. In the specialty chemicals and materials segment, demand has recovered, with end-uses driving growth, particularly for zirconium metal and chemical zirconia for auto catalysts and technology-driven applications.
