Recent national and international events have brought attention to the safety and reliability of nuclear energy; mine safety at the one year anniversary of the Upper Big Branch coal mine disaster; and the U.S. reliance on foreign imports for key rare earths that drive national defense and green energy technologies. The rare earth element (REE) paper, which leveraged the expertise of more than two dozen national and international SME member REE experts, calls for increased federal support to re-establish a competitive domestic rare earth supply chain of these minerals that are of critical strategic importance to the U.S. commitment to clean energy technology.
