Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2009. The drop in demand for coal by all the domestic coal-consuming sectors, combined with the increasing coal stock level at electric power plants also had an influence on coal production for the year.
