摘要

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. The cutters were small and looked little like modern hard-rock disc cutters. Because the rock could be excavated with low cutter loads, the cutter bearings did not need to be very large.
