To contend with the hard conditions, Newmont uses Atlas Copco's Pit Viper 271 (PV-271) blashole drill. Because of the hardness of the rock, drilling at Phoenix requires hammer drilling and the mine uses Atlas Copco TD65 hammers with 171 mm (6.75 in.) bits. Because of the hardness of the rock, "drill maintenance is very important at Phoenix," said Holland.
