Oil is something that we tend to take for granted. But, it is actually a highly-sophisticated blend of components, . designed to create a film between moving parts to reduce wear and heat build up due to friction. Because the oil in a Mini has to lubricate the engine, gearbox and final drive, even more is demanded from it than in a car with a more conventional layout. Strip a 50,000-mile Mini engine and there is likely to be noticeable cam follower and bore wear, especially if the oil has not been changed regularly. Do the same to a similar MG Midget engine and the cam followers will still be good, but the Midget has three separate lots of oil for the engine, gear box and also the differential.
