A drum-braked Mini can accommodate five-inch, or sometimes even 5.5-inch, wheels under the standard wheel bodywork but, as soon as S 7.5-inch or Rover 8.4-inch discs are fitted to the front, and corresponding spacer drums to the rear, most wheels wider than 4.5-5 inches legally require wheel arch extensions to cover the tread of the tyre. Many people fit Mini Special arches, of the type fitted as standard to all 12-mch-wheeled Minis from 1984-onwards. These are undoubtedly the easiest narrow arches to fit but, for the sake of a little more work, a set of Gp2 arches can be fitted and these will result in a much more classic look.rnOriginally fitted to some Works Rally Minis in the 1960s, this style of arch was available for fitting to any Mini from BMC/BLMC Competitions and then Special Tuning in Abingdon in the 1960s and 70s. Many copies have been made over the years. Some fit better than others. It should be remembered that the originals were not always the best fitting parts. The great advantage of Gp2 arches is that they can easily be painted to match body colour. An alternative is to paint them black, in true Works style.
