The German Economic miracle of the mid-1950s inspired the enterprising motor manufacturer, Glas, to create a new breed of small car that was more sophisticated than the diminutive Glas T300 bubble car and more manoeuvrable than the VW Beetle. The 1958 Glas Goggomobile Isar T-700, launched in February, was ideally placed to capture this new market. It looked highly chic, with its duotone paint, 'dog's-leg' windscreen (inspired by the Chevrolet Bel-Air) and vestigial tail fins. It was also built on the marque's reputation for excellent road manners - 'The only way to flip a Goggomobil is to drive it over a land mine', observed Hobby magazine. The two-cylinder 600cc (later upgraded to 700cc) engine was designed along BMW lines and drove the rear wheels. The gearbox was a particularly smooth four-speed unit. Sadly, the fact that the Isar. was somewhat rushed into production meant that early models suffered a vast number of problems, from inadequate windscreen sealing to major crankshaft failings and serious corrosion too.
