We took Karen's and Jim's Elf, complete with its 'unknown' 1275cc twin-carb engine, for setting up by Alan, Ian and Colin of Atspeed Racing in Rayleigh, Essex. Twin SU HS2 carbs, standard on original Coopers and Ss, can be very difficult to set up but, if they are in good condition, Atspeed says that they don't need frequent adjustment. Neglected pairs can suffer from a catalogue of mystery problems. Jim thought the Elf was running too rich and felt a bit flat. Fuel consumption was higher than it should have been.
