Last month the rather tired front drum brakes on Karen's Clubman 1100 estate were upgraded to Cooper S discs. The car has already been fitted with a Stage 1 kit to up the power from the 1098cc engine and, being a 1980 car that has seen some service, the suspension was in a similar condition to the brakes before the upgrade. The rubber springs were well past their best and in need of replacement, as were the dampers. A new set of rubber springs would have solved the problem but, as the Clubby will probably be used to carry stuff around, a coil spring conversion seemed the sensible way to go. These are not coil-overs, but replace the doughnuts and, apparently, don't collapse nearly as quickly as their rubber equivalents.
